What is a TMJ Disorder? (TMD)

Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Disorder, known as TMD or TMJ, is a condition that often goes undiagnosed.

‍To test if you have TMD, place a finger over the joint in front of your ear, and open wide until you can feel the joint move. If you feel the joint click or if it's tender when you press, you may have TMD.

Here are other common symptoms:

  • Frequent buzzing or ringing sounds in ears (tinnitus)
  • Pain in your face or jaw joint area.
  • Pain when you chew, speak or open your mouth wide
  • Clicking or popping sounds on either side of the jaw
  • Locked jaw (have trouble chewing food)
  • Toothaches
  • Neck and shoulders pain
  • Frequent headaches and migraines
  • Frequent dizziness (vertigo)
  • Teeth grinding at night (bruxism)

Is TMJ Disorder (TMD) serious?

TMD happens when there is a mismatch between the upper and lower teeth, joints and facial muscles responsible for jaw movement.

Early intervention and prevention of TMD are necessary to avoid chronic pain and permanent disability.

Headaches, ear pain and ringing sounds may get progressively worse over time and become a major disruption to your everyday life.

TMD can be diagnosed as mild or severe.

Treating Mild TMD

Mild TMD symptoms can come and go without much pain or disruption.

However, mild TMD, if left untreated, can progress to severe TMD.

Early intervention saves pain, time and cost in the long run.

We guide patients with mild TMD through physical therapy and orthosis treatment after diagnosing their TMD symptoms.

It is up to the patient to decide if an Orthotic device is needed to retain his/her bite position.

Still Have tmd?

Severe Cases of TMD

If you are showing persistent pains from TMD, we recommend opting for the complete treatment.

Here is a summary of the orthotic treatment that patient will undergo:

  • Step 1 - Pain Relief

To get your facial muscles to relax and relieve the pain, we must set your jaw to its neutral position. To this, we use our TENS device to exercise the jaw muscles gently.

This 1-hour gentle process allows your jaw to relax, reducing your pain.

  • Step 2 - Diagnosis

We then use a sophisticated computerised jaw-tracking headgear to trace the jaw movement. The software uses this data to obtain your neutral bite position.

This serves as the reference for your bite restoration guard (Orthotic device). We use a silicone bite registration material to capture the bite in that relaxed zone.

  • Step 3 - Customised Treatment

On a follow up session, you will receive your fully customised Orthotic device.

The Orthotic device is precision crafted in the US, designed to fit you perfectly. We will check the contact points during the session to make sure that you are biting down comfortably at your neutral bite position.

A physical therapy exercise regime will also be introduced to strengthen your facial muscles and form the proper habits.

The frequency of device use and physical therapy exercises will depend significantly on the severity of your condition.

How our treatment works to resolve your TMD

We use a low-frequency Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) device and K7 jaw-tracking device to design the best-fit orthotic, custom made for your jaw.

✓ Restore jaw muscles to their natural position
✓ Accurate measurements to align jaw
✓ Relief pain and discomfort

After TENS therapy, we will examine your teeth and jaw to determine the type of bite splints needed to restore your jaw and your bite back to healthy proportions.

We help you ease your jaw, head and neck pains. No more annoying sounds in your jaw and ear. Form good habits and keep pain at bay, once and for all.
